Anti-spam labs whether they be gathering reputation data, message signatures, content filtering rules or building adaptive filters all suffer from the same problem. The spammers have a headstart. No matter how comprehensive their data or large their spamtraps it is impossible for the labs to know where the next spam campaign is coming from or what it will look like before the spam is sent. Its is race and the spammer always gets to go first. No matter what there will always some lag time between when the spam campaign begins and when the anti-spam lab can turn their visibility of the campaign into data they can use to protect their customers.
