Traffic Control™ with Cloudmark Authority™, provided by MailChannels and Cloudmark, is a multi-layered messaging security solution designed for mid-tier and independent Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to reduce the strain on system resources and to defend users against message attacks.

Not only is the volume of attacks escalating, but also spam as a percentage of all email traffic is at an all time high, and the severity of bursts in spam is getting worse. Traffic Control™ with Cloudmark Authority™ eliminates downtime associated with traffic bursts and denial of service (DoS) attacks, and prevents delivery delays by reducing the volume of abusive traffic that reaches the mail server. The solution accomplishes this through a combination of connection management and content filtering.

Traffic Control™ intelligently throttles suspicious email traffic before it hits the Mail Transfer Agent (MTA), reducing overall email volume by 60-90%. After throttling, Cloudmark Authority™ then screens out over 98% of the spam, phishing, and virus attacks that haven't already been rejected. The solution has an exceptionally light footprint and can be installed on the same hardware as the existing MTA.

Traffic Control™ with Cloudmark Authority™ Process Flow

  1. Traffic Control™ assesses the reputation and behavior of email senders, separating them into different quality of service classes. Good senders are guaranteed sufficient resources to deliver their email quickly and efficiently, while suspicious senders have their access to email server resources cut back or denied.
  2. Cloudmark Authority™ runs a series of eight Advanced Message Fingerprinting algorithms on each message, and the fingerprints are checked against a local cache of known bad fingerprints. This catalogue is updated with new message threat data via micro-updates every 45 seconds.
  3. Any message that matches a bad fingerprint is either rejected in real-time or delivered to the recipient's spam folder, while all legitimate messages are delivered to the inbox. Recipients' feedback on message classification is automatically incorporated into the system without any administrative overhead.
